fs30 – The House

The Only Non-Flyable fs-Project: Our Home at Bartholomä Airfield

As the Akaflieg moved from Hornberg to the newly opened sailplane airfield at Bartholomä, it quickly became obvious that it would be a good idea to build accomodations directly on the airfield. Only after construction began did it become clear how massive an undertaking it was going to be. Nevertheless, the Akaflieg decided to press on, making no compromises and taking all requests from members into account. Construction lasted from 1978 till 1984 and the results can be seen. The members of that generation often abstained from flying and put in a lot of time and energy into building the house alongside their work in the workshop. Tribute was paid to their performance by giving the house an fs- designation, with the name fs30 granted to it.

Thanks to one of our members Fridolin Wohlfahrt, who took the lead in the project and used the experience gained from working at the Züblin construction company to help build the house, making him an indispensable part of the project.

Looking back, it’s easy to say that the effort was worth it. Apart from our workshop on campus, this is the second home of the Akaflieg. This is where we celebrated some parties and had flying camps and one-time moments while gliding. Many of us spend almost every weekend there, even if the weather isn’t too inviting.
